Piers Gough's designs for Brighton Marina sound perfectly ghastly (November 13).

What has already been built there desecrates the natural environment quite enough. We do not need redevelopment on top of the cliffs, panoramic lifts or 12-storey mini-towers.

Mr Gough may want to provide sea views for residents and visitors. How about some attempt to preserve the magnificent views of the cliffs from Brighton itself? That is something that should be taken into consideration whenever developments such as this are mooted yet never seems to be.

Over the years, the view of the cliffs from Marine Parade and the Palace Pier has been steadily eroded by ugly development.

One of the most precious benefits of living on the seafront was to be able to watch the evening light on the cliff faces and the ferries going to and from Newhaven.

But this view is now severely compromised by the marina's clutter of Lego-like structures.

Recently, a garish hotel tower, topped by a massive flagmast, has been allowed to go up, blocking out another segment of the cliff view.

Views such as this are an important part of our heritage and ought to be protected. Yet the developers and planners never seem to show any consideration for them.
