When the harbour at Brighton Marina was completed more than 20 years ago, there were widespread fears the project would end up becoming a white elephant.

The development of a superstore, multiplex cinema, restaurants, shops and hundreds of homes since then have proved the doubters wrong.

Now the new Waterfront development is about to open and there are plans for another £100 million scheme at the popular site.

The new buildings will make the marina more attractive. They will also improve the access from outside and the internal layout.

But there is a danger the owners are forgetting the primary purpose of the marina, which is for yachting.

The number of berths has been sharply reduced and the yacht club keeps having to find new temporary premises.

Marina owners should now call a halt to any more development that further reduces the number of berths.

They should also make sure the yacht club is given an attractive and permanent home.

The whole point of the marina is to provide an attractive harbour development and having yachts is an integral part of that.

If the yachts disappear, marina bosses may find getting visitors to the harbour is no longer plain sailing.
