Gary Smith told his Worthing Thunder players to win their NBL Trophy quarter-final and make it convincing.

Even the Thunder coach however could not have expected his side to effectively see off visitors Worcester Wolves by the fourth minute of the second quarter.

Thunder were 42-13 up by that point and were able to give their bench men extensive court time as they coasted to a 118-84 win on Saturday.

The Conference side, beaten finalists last season, were too quick, incisive and, when required, strong around the baskets for their lower division opponents, who put up no less than 40 three-point attempts, of which ten found the target.

Thunder led just 16-13 midway through the first quarter but then scored the last 18 points of the period.

They also hit the first eight of the second quarter, making a 26-0 run in total which settled the contest.

The initial burst included a Lavoris Jerry dunk after good work by Daniel Hildreth, a three from Marvin Addy and an and-one by Gaylon Moore.

Improving young point guard Rani Malik opened the second quarter with two threes and was one of the stars of the show, combining well in the back court with Hildreth.

Thunder led 66-33 at half-time, by which time teenage guard Sam Mead had already been sent on for his debut.

Addy's dunk and three-pointer lit up the third quarter and the closing stages saw Mead, Alistair Dean and Steve Morgan delight their senior team-mates and the crowd with their first points for Thunder.

Thunder: Jerry 28, Moore 23, Malik 19, Harris 15, Addy 12, Hildreth 8, Brame 8, Dean 2, Morgan 2, Mead 1.
