A grandfather is to take on athletes from around the world in one of the toughest sporting events.

Colin Miller, of Rectory Farm Road, Sompting, has qualified for the 2002 International Triathlon Union World Championships, taking place next Saturday.

Aside from a 1,500m swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run, the self-employed plumber will have to contend with the humidity of Cancun, Mexico, where the event is being staged.

The annual race has attracted 3,000 triathletes from 75 different countries.

Despite feeling wary of how the climate change will affect his performance, Colin said he was determined to do his best in the 55 to 60 age category.

Colin, 55, is a member of Amphibians II Triathlon Club in Horsham.

He said: "It's 80F over there. That's what I'm worried about.

"This is the first time I have qualified for the world championships. I've always wanted to go to them.

"I leave on Sunday for Mexico and will have six days to get used to the weather and the heat."

To prepare for the championships, he has gone swimming three times a week, cycled four times a week for two hours and battled along five-mile runs whenever his work schedule allowed.

Colin, who has two daughters and one grandson, said: "My wife Dawn has given me her full support.

"After all the training I have done, I'll finish no matter what."
