I was amazed and a little angry to read the front-page article about Andrew Garrett standing down from Worthing Borough Council (The Argus, October 29).
It was Councillor Garrett's own group that voted through the changes to the council workings he now says make attending meetings "pointless". He did not seem too bothered about removing power from backbench councillors when he wasn't one of them.
Since the Liberal Democrats took over in May, we have done everything possible to extend the opportunities for opposition members to have their say - again, something Coun Garrett signally failed to do himself.
There are 29 other councillors, including myself, and 16 other members of his political group who still turn up to meetings. What makes Coun Garrett unique in being unable or unwilling to attend?
He has let down the council, his political party and his constituents - about whom he made so much noise when it suited him - by not turning up and helping the other councillors in his ward.
-James Doyle, Selden ward, Worthing Borough Council
