A car which was once a milk float will be among the unique vehicles taking part in Sunday's London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

The remodelled 1903 Gladiator Tonneau will line up alongside more than 400 entrants in the annual event for cars built before 1905.

Of the drivers, Jeremy Oates will be hoping to make it fourth time lucky - his 1904 Crestmobile Tonneau has failed to complete three previous runs.

And a couple of drivers will be keeping things in the family.

John Dennis will drive a 1902 Dennis Tonneau, originally manufactured by his grandfather, while Frank Gresham will be steering a De Dion Bouton Voitourette, bought new by his grandfather in 1901.

Other cars taking part will be familiar from films, TV and the London stage. These include the star of the 1953 film Genevieve and an 1898 Daimler Wagonette which appeared in last year's BBC show Station Jim.

Earlier this year, the organisers caused controversy by allowing cars built in 1905 and 1906 to take part for the first time.

They reverted to the old rules after drivers threatened a boycott, though 1905 and 1906 cars which had already applied were allowed to keep their places.

The run starts at Hyde Park Corner at 7.30am, and travels along the A23 through south London and Sussex, before arriving on Brighton seafront and parading along Madeira Drive.

Andrew Coe, chief executive of organisers International Motor Sports, said: "The route has been enhanced so spectators and entrants are in for a real treat."
