Brighton and Hove is naturally disappointed it has not been shortlisted as European Capital of Culture in 2008.
But the odds were always against this occurring when the competitors included some of the biggest cities in the UK.
It was worth a try and the city had enormous fun in doing so, including staging a series of big events throughout the year.
There has been predictable criticism about city council backing for the bid, which cost council tax payers £150,000.
But far more than this came in sponsorship from other sources, including the private sector, and the cash enabled thousands of people to have a good time.
Of course it's true the main concentration should be on grave problems such as homelessness but occasionally, councillors have to take their eyes off the ground and look towards the stars.
