Back again to Brighton's West Pier. My idea for its future may not please some but I know it will please many, especially the sick and their carers.

I never saw the pier in all its Victorian splendour but if seeing what is being built on the gasworks site in Church Road, Hove, and the horrendous developments of so-called "living spaces" in nice residential areas is an example of what planners do once they get going, I doubt I ever will.

Please leave the pier to the elements but make it safe first. It is beautiful as it is. Let nature deal with it and allow the birds to roost.

Watching them leave at dawn is an extremely therapeutic experience so on the land site adjoining the pier why not build a low-rise hospice for the terminally ill?

The Martlets and the Sussex Beacon are wonderful places but try getting to them on public transport - it is practically impossible on a Sunday.

Not all can afford taxis. If there was a place in central Hove on flat ground, the sick could be taken up and down to the beach, thus enjoying the sea air and its benefits.

I, for one, would gladly be willing to visit frequently on a voluntary basis. I presently do so at the Sussex Beacon charity shop in George Street, Hove.

But helping or visiting the hospice is difficult. I don't drive, unfortunately. Please let's put people first for a change.
