Artist's impressions unveiled today show how the Preston Barracks site off Lewes Road, Brighton, could be developed to boost the city's economy.

Our digital image, the first to be released, shows what the future may have in store - low-cost housing, factory units, a community hall, training centre and footbridge.

Members of the public and stakeholders are now set to have their say on the proposal for the brownfield land.

The 5.6-acre site is being touted as a prime opportunity to improve the city's economy by providing hundreds of job possibilities and attracting new employers.

Brighton and Hove City Council bought the land off the Ministry of Defence in March, with the financial support of the city's Regeneration Partnership and the South East England Development Agency (Seeda).

Urban design consultancy, Gillespies, has been appointed to prepare a masterplan for the site.

Deputy chairman of culture, regeneration and housing Councillor Don Turner, said: "The development of the Preston Barracks site is of key importance to the future prosperity of our city.

"It will provide jobs, homes and training opportunities for residents and attract investment.

"The planning of this important project will take time and must be carefully thought out to ensure we make the best possible use of this prime site."

The image, drawn up by Gillespies, will be on show at an exhibition today, in which the public will be encouraged to have their say.

Exact details of the site will be decided only after consultation with the local community and other stakeholders.

The planning team will report to a steering group made up of representatives of Seeda, the Brighton & Hove Regeneration Partnership and the city council.

Gillespies is expected to finish the masterplan later this month.

The proposals will be on show at the Lewes Road United Reformed Church, Saunders Park Rise West, from 11am to 7.30pm.

The exhibition will go on show in Kings House and Brighton Town Hall after next week.
