Albion loan striker Graham Barrett suffered a night of mixed emotions as Republic of Ireland under-21s lost 3-2 at home to Switzerland.

Barrett had a fine game, went close to scoring, saved what looked like a certain Swiss goal - but ended up on the losing side.

The Arsenal attacker was in terrific form as Ireland went two-up in their European Under 21 championship tie with Switzerland at Buckley Park, Killkenny.

He was unlucky not to score after seven minutes when he got his head to an Andy Reid cross.

After 32 minutes another Reid cross saw him dummy brilliantly but Liam Miller hammered over the bar.

After 47 minutes a Barrett header was well saved and he was just wide two minutes later with a clever placed ball.

Two minutes later he was back in his six yard box defending and cleared as the Irish were under severe pressure.

He looked to be in bother after 54 minutes when he was brought down by Roland Schwegler.

He bounced back, only to be injured again when he clashed with Alain Nef after 62 minutes.

From there the Irish went downhill but Barrett could be happy with a good personal performance.

Bobby Zamora was a substitute but did not get on as England under-21s won 3-1 against Macedonia in Group Seven.
