Residents are being driven to distraction by thundering traffic.
Noise pollution is getting worse as the number of cars increases.
Tests by the Highway Agency have shown an innovative road surfacing known as whisper concrete is the best solution, reducing noise levels by three decibels.
But the agency, which is responsible for major roads such as the A27, has stopped using whisper concrete, preferring to lay thin layers of asphalt.
It says it is hampered by deadlines and budget, as whisper concrete costs about ten per cent more and is time-consuming to lay.
However, residents who are being hounded from their homes by noise want action, not excuses. A solution must be found to the increasing volume of noise as residents have a right to a quiet life.
Whatever technique is used, the sooner something can be done to reduce the noise, the better.
