I am puzzled as to why Jacqueline Smith (Letters, October 2) should accuse Brighton and Hove City Council of failing to support women and children with regard to local breastcare services.

The council lost no time in publicly voicing its objections to any proposed move of the Nigel Porter Unit to Haywards Heath. Councillors from across the political spectrum signed the letter we submitted to the planning committee, making it clear why we felt Rosaz House was the most appropriate site for the new unit.

We consider this issue to be above party politics. Clearly, the unit should stay where it is most needed. I am confident we will continue to work closely together to ensure the necessary funding is identified to enact the decision by the local Primary Care Trusts to retain the unit in Brighton and to provide a modern new facility at Rosaz House.
