Join the most renowned pub landlord in the UK as he swigs his beer and puts the world to rights.

With a bulky six-ft-three frame, bulldog face and belt with huge gold letters spelling the word "beer", the character created by Al Murray will make you understand that "rules is rules, and if we didn't have rule, where would we be, eh? That's right, France!"

The character is a satire of an English idiot in the mould of Harry Enfield's Loadsamoney and Alf Garnett and Murray sees his popularity is the result of his familiarity.

"It's quite obvious what the joke is, I think. Everyone has been in a pub and everyone has met an idiot and this guy's an idiot in a pub," he says.

"It was sheer luck how the character fell to me, I was doing a show with Harry Hill in Edinburgh and the theme of the show was pubs.

"On the first day, we still hadn't decided how to cover all the links. So that afternoon I just said well, I'll be a pub landlord and put on a bad suit. And then that evening I just did it and the character grew out of that."

Multi-award winner Murray starred in the TV series Time, Gentlemen Please, has just completed a successful West End run and appears at the festival as part of his new stand-up national tour.

"Without sounding press releasey, I think the festival is great," he says.

"I've been going to Brighton and using it for warm-ups for years. It's one of those switched-on, vibey places which are great for developing material. This festival is an acknowledgement of how important Brighton is to comedy."

The show starts at 7.30pm, tickets £16.50.
