Brighton and Hove has finally learnt to love the Clock Tower 114 years after it was built.
For years, it was condemned as a Victorian monstrosity and there were countless calls for it to be demolished.
But now restoration work is nearing completion, which will include making the original golden ball mechanism work again for the first time in a century.
Work has been so slow on this project that some people may have half-forgotten what the structure looks like when it finally comes out of scaffolding.
But it should be sparkling and provide the right time in a city centre notably lacking in public clocks.
The Clock Tower was opened a year late for the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria but at least it has been restored just in time for the jubilee year of Queen Elizabeth.
