A Gatwick Airport security guard who contracted Legionnaires' disease has been discharged from hospital.

The man, who worked in the north terminal, was struck down with the potentially lethal disease last week and was admitted to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.

Checks on air conditioning and water systems at the airport show he was unlikely to have caught the bug at work.

The man works for Securicor Aviation, contracted to British Airways.

Dr Peter English, Surrey's consultant in communicable disease control who investigated the case, said it would be almost impossible to trace the source of the bug.

Legionnaires' disease is often contracted by inhaling mist from water sources contaminated with bacteria. It cannot pass between people.
