A special council meeting has been called to discuss a decision to keep breast cancer services in Brighton.

Mid Sussex district councillors want to air their views on the ruling made by Brighton and Hove City and Mid Sussex Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and asked for an extraordinary full council meeting to be set up.

The chief executive and chairman of Mid Sussex PCT have been invited along with the chief officer of Mid Downs Community Health Council (CHC).

Health bosses maintain that they have made the best decision. Both PCTs agreed to build a new unit at the Rosaz House site opposite the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and keep existing services at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.

At first, it had originally wanted to transfer all breast cancer services from the cramped Nigel Porter unit at the Royal Sussex to the Princess Royal.

But more than 30,000 people signed a petition backed by The Argus calling for services to stay in the city.

They said the vast majority of women attending the unit were from the Brighton and Hove area and public transport links between the city and the Princess Royal were poor.

The Rosaz House site is also next to the Sussex Cancer Centre where breast cancer patients can get vital radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment.

Campaigners said keeping facilities in Brighton was the best for everybody because it meant women from both areas were still getting breast cancer services.

But Mid Sussex councillors feel the PCT was pressurised into accepting the Rosaz House option.

Immediately after the meeting, district council leader Christine Field said: "Mid Sussex PCT was not given the opportunity to vote for any option except option three.

"That I believe is fundamentally wrong. I believe the decision should be made on the quality of services and not on the location."

However, in a statement issued after the meeting, Brighton and Hove City and Mid Sussex PCTs said: "There are no losers in this scenario.

"The Princess Royal breast care service now has a secure future.

"The viability of the hospital is not affected by this decision."

The meeting takes place at the Mid Sussex council offices in Haywards Heath on Wednesday at 7pm.
