Take a Hollywood star, let him loose on a classic Sixties play in his home city and you have an intriguing mixture.

Landing Patrick Bergin is a real coup for the Brighton and Hove Theatre Company.

The actor, who is best known for his role as Julia Roberts's psychotic husband in Sleeping With The Enemy, is perfectly at home directing.

The star, who lives in Kemp Town, Brighton, gets the most out of the talented, four-strong cast and has introduced more sex into what is already a very sexy play.

The first act includes an oral-sex scene and ends with the only female character having an orgasm while dressed in a revealing nightie.

Apart from being erotic, this play is also violent and offers a fascinating insight into jealousy and relationships.

This was the first Joe Orton play to capture the public imagination. That was nearly 40 years ago and the work has not aged, which shows it was well ahead of its time.

The casting is spot on and they work well together, making the most of the limitations of the concert-style stage at the Old Market.

Pieter Vodden looks good and captures the character of the sly, scheming and insecure Mr Sloane superbly.

The seductress landlady Kath is played by Kyla Moore, who is excellent as the woman who suddenly finds the man of her dreams as a tenant.

The interplay between the two is a joy to watch.

There are also good character performances from Brighton-based actors Daniel Beales and Mike Darnell.

The company deserves to succeed as the city's own repertory theatre making the most of the talent in the city and, on this basis, it will, thanks to Bergin's input.
