Those of us who supported the campaign to retain improved breast care facilities in Brighton are absolutely delighted the Mid Sussex and Brighton and Hove PCTs reached the decision at their meeting on Friday that we had all wished for.

This was principally due to the future location of the unit being in close proximity to acute cancer services at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

However, it is so important to remember that those who campaigned just as tirelessly for the facility to be relocated to the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath are now feeling disappointed.

My husband and I live on the outskirts of Brighton yet it took us 45 minutes on Friday morning to drive to Burgess Hill to attend the meeting.

Those living in the Haywards Heath area could well face a difficult and tiring journey to Brighton to access their hospital treatment.

We in Brighton and Hove should not appear to be triumphant but must continue the campaign so that better breast care screening facilities and services can be made more accessible for all patients, wherever they live.

Earlier and quicker diagnosis is vital for those needing treatment and we must all continue the work to make sure the best-quality clinical care is available to everyone.
