A night club doorman saw police hit bouncers from another club with their batons, a court has been told.

Achilles Souliotis, a security man at the Honeyclub in Lower Esplanade, Brighton, said officers struck some of the bouncers on their arms and bodies.

He told a jury at Hove Crown Court yesterday he did not see one of the bouncers from Crawley hit over the head with a baton.

Police surveillance cameras recorded what happened after a stag night party ended in violence outside the club on Brighton seafront.

Crawley bouncer Ian Jackson, who is 6ft 8in, was seen on footage played to the jury allegedly being hit over the head by an officer wielding a baton.

Other members of the group were hit on their bodies and legs and some were bitten by a police dog called to the scene, it was alleged.

Phillip Matthews, defending Jackson, asked Mr Suliotis if he had seen police hit anyone with batons.

Mr Suliotis said: "Yes, on the body and on the legs. I saw the tall guy hit on the legs and stomach, but not his head."

Robert Cohen, 25, of Climping Road, Ifield, Crawley; Simon Grimmer, 26, of Abinger Drive, Redhill; Wayne Howell, 26, and Jackson, 37, both of Roffey Close, Horley, deny violent disorder.

The trial continues.
