Lancing manager Andy Gander counted the cost of poor defending after a 4-4 draw at home with Oakwood in County League Division Two.

His team took the lead on four occasions but were fortunate to escape with a point when Gerald Manville missed a great opportunity late on.

Gander said: "It was very disappointing from a defensive point of view. We had a look at Oakwood in midweek and I fancied our chances of scoring goals but I hadn't banked on giving away two sloppy goals.

"In the end, I was grateful we didn't lose the match."

Lancing were ahead with goals from Jamie Cole, Tony Miles, Glen Souter and Matt Kelly but Gareth Neathey (2), Scott Christensen and Manville levelled each time.

Oakwood coach Alan Gould, whose side have now played all three top sides away, said: "We would have been pleased with a point at the start but we had a good opportunity at the end to win it."

Meanwhile, Shinewater stayed top with a 1-0 home win against lowly Mile Oak, courtesy of Nick Martin's own goal five minutes into the second half.

The result ended Oak's unbeaten record under new boss Anthony Whittington.

He said: "I thought we were very unlucky. In the first half it would have been hard to tell who the league leaders were."

Scott Carden made his Oak debut and with Neil Roberts and Tony Burnett on the way back from injury, Whittington is confident he can revive the Brighton side's fortunes.

He added: "I am enjoying it. The job is good fun. We had a poor start but have started to shut out the goals. Now we have to start scoring them too."

Shinewater remain unbeaten and are three points clear at the top but manager Dave Shearing is refusing to get carried away.

He said: "We are are just eight points away from securing our status in Division Two for another season.

"That was our aim at the start of the season and nothing has changed."
