Cecil Kellaway was not overly tall but was another giant among Hollywood supporting actors of the Thirties and Forties.
He possessed a near-impeccable English accent despite having been born in South Africa and acting in Australia. He did not arrive in Hollywood until 1939.
His role as the Warlock in I Married A Witch (1942), starring Fredric March and Veronica Lake, springs readily to mind. He was equally captivating as the psychiatrist in Harvey (1950), starring James Stewart and Josephine Hull, who won an Oscar for her performance.
Cecil was twice nominated for an Academy Award, for his roles in The Luck Of The Irish (1948) and - in 1967, would you believe? - Guess Who's Coming To Dinner.
After a long career, he died in 1973, aged 82.
