Every day, I have a small investment on the nags, never more than I can afford to lose and a lot less than other people invest in the brewery trade.

I am, fortunately, teetotal and I will bet I get more joy from my couple of quid.

Like most punters, I end up on the wrong end of the pencil, losing a few bob, but it's worth it.

Last Tuesday evening, I purchased The Argus to look at the next day's runners. I don't usually.

On Wednesday, I backed what looked like the writer's three best efforts and for my few quid I picked up £70-odd on a treble.

In fact, the writer had, from 21 races, nine winners, five seconds, three thirds and a couple of blow-outs. Great picking and great writing.

You have just gained a regular reader and, hopefully, the good work will continue.

There is no byline on the horse-racing page. Is it by Pat Kelly, who writes on the dogs?
