The buzz that has made Brighton city centre such an attractive place for residents and visitors has stopped well short of Lewes Road.

For most of the past century, there has been deprivation in this part of Brighton.

Although other areas of the city, such as North Laine and Hanover, have been improved during the past decade, Lewes Road has remained poverty-stricken.

A police operation is tackling some of the more immediate concerns but residents say deeper-seated problems are being ignored.

The city council has done a good job in improving areas ranging from Poets Corner to St James's Street. The New Deal has helped Whitehawk and Moulsecoomb.

Now it needs to turn its attention to working with people around Lewes Road to undertake similar work there.
