Organisers of this year's Pride have handed more than £10,000 to worthy causes.

The annual festival for gay, lesbian and bi-sexual people last month was another major success.

With 25,000 people parading through the streets, Brighton was brought to life in a sea of colour.

Up to 50,000 joined the fun day in Preston Park, with stars such as Petula Clarke entertaining crowds.

The general behaviour of party-goers was said to be "impeccable".

Although numbers were slightly down on last year because of the inclement weather, committee member PJ Aldred was pleased to raise such a large amount for charities in Brighton and Hove.

A special closing party was held on Wednesday at the Revenge nightclub in Brighton.

Ms Aldred said: "This was our chance to hand over the money raised and also to thank everyone who helped out.

"About 60 people turned up at Revenge who hosted it for free and they even gave us a few drinks as well.

"This was the main event since Pride, although we have had a few other fund-raising events.

"In total we collected £10,750, which has been split between 12 groups in the voluntary sector - people like the women's centre and Sussex Beacon."

Other groups to benefit include Mind, the Older Lesbian and Gay Forum and Rainbow Chorus.

The accounts for the year reveal extra health and safety measures put in place following the Fatboy Slim concert in June, pushed the budget to almost £144,000.

Ms Aldred added: "We have already started work for next year's event. We have started getting concessions and sponsors on board.

"It is run by a voluntary committee and one paid worker. The AGM is in November and we are looking to get some new people for the committee."
