Are car drivers becoming more clever?

At about 9.20 the other morning, I was driving in Roedean Road near the junction with Wilson Avenue, Brighton, and had stopped at the traffic lights outside the fire station.

A car was being driven down Wilson Avenue and turned eastwards into Roedean Road. I couldn't help seeing the male driver turn the corner with one hand while the other was holding a cigarette as well as a mobile phone, on which he was engaged in urgent conversation.

It is a pity he couldn't steer the car with his knees - then he could have read the newspaper as well.

It is right to point out the dangers of driving one-handed while on the phone.

That morning's example could have ended in tragedy since a small child could have run out from the bushes into the road.

The vehicle was, at that stage, out of control. I wonder just what sort of excuse the driver would have offered?

The sooner the using of mobile phones while driving becomes a criminal offence, the better. Having had my car written off by a buffoon using his mobile phone while driving gives me a vested interest.
