Butchers who flout health rules are being warned they could lose their licences.

The warning, by Brighton and Hove City Council, follows the prosecution of a business in Hove.

Sayed Ghafoor Ahmadi, owner of Brighton Halal Meats in Portland Road, was fined £350 for a number of breaches of food hygiene regulations.

He admitted at Brighton and Hove Magistrates Court seven offences under the Food Safety Act.

Environmental health officials found inadequate rubbish disposal, dirty staff toilets, poor hand-washing facilities and peeling paint in food preparation areas.

Roy Pickard, senior environmental health officer for the council, said after the case: "Butchers must continue to meet the conditions of their licence or face having it suspended or revoked."

The council was awarded £160 costs.

The business is trading again after having had its butcher's licence suspended while a number of improvements demanded by the council were carried out.
