Car-crazy Jamie Creighton has been fined for driving without due care and attention - in a home-made go-kart.

Mr Creighton, 34, was also given six penalty points by Brighton magistrates at the conclusion of a six-month legal saga.

He was spotted in his friend's kart in a supermarket car park by security guards who called police.

When officers arrived at Asda in Brighton Marina Mr Creighton was arrested and put in a police cell before being questioned and charged.

Yesterday, he criticised the judicial system for spending thousands taking his case to court.

Mr Creighton said he was travelling at no more than 20mph when he was pulled over and added:

"On the night of the arrest I was put in a cell for an hour-and-a-half and treated like a proper criminal.

"They could have just fined me but they wanted to arrest me.

"A friend of mine had his Mercedes broken into and they didn't even bother to come round.

"They just gave him a crime number and said they were too busy.

"The whole thing is a bit extreme to say the least.

"I was having a spin in the kart when I thought no one would be around.

"My solicitor put up a good argument but the magistrates were having none of it."

PC Mark Noble, who was one of the first on the scene, said the 250cc go-kart, powered by a motorcycle engine, was being driven without lights.

He said: "The potential for a serious accident there was very, very high."

Creighton, of Grove Hill, Brighton, was fined £250 and ordered to pay £110 costs.
