Jamie Creighton was silly to have driven a homemade go-kart around the Asda car park at Brighton Marina.
He deserved to be ticked off by the police but not to be clapped in a cell and have the full weight of the law come down on him.
Now he has been fined by Brighton magistrates. The case has cost him hundreds and the taxpayers' thousands.
While police are often criticised for inaction on crime, in this case they seem to have put the kart before the horse.
