Scott Newman and Michael Carberry both hammered centuries as Surrey rattled up 464-4 against Sussex on the opening day of the Second XI Championship match.
The left-handed pair made Sussex suffer by sharing in an opening stand of 289 after Surrey won the toss at Banstead.
Former Brighton University student Newman had fired 26 fours and two sixes in making 159 off only 155 balls when he was taken at mid-wicket off Paul Hutchison.
Carberry added a further 93 with Ben Scott (64 not out) before Paul Havell had Carberry caught at deep square leg for 169, which also included 26 fours and two sixes from 179 deliveries.
Off-spinner Chris Nash, fresh from his first team debut against Warwickshire last week, got through 33 overs and snatched two late wickets by having James Benning (30) leg before and Alex Hollingsworth (7) caught behind.
This gave Nash 2-13 from 13 overs in his third spell. He previously had 0-99 in 20 overs.
