Mike Wheeler spun himself into the record books by claiming all ten wickets in a top-of-the-table league clash.

The 43-year-old's feat came for Willingdon 2nd XI against their Hailsham counterparts in an East Sussex League division seven encounter on Saturday.

Wheeler, a manager for a contract catering company, served up perfect figures of 10-69 off 16 overs as Willingdon won by four wickets.

The off-spinner has now tasted the ultimate highs and lows of bowling. Amazingly, his perfect ten came three years after the lowest moment of his bowling career when he was hit for six sixes in an over.

On Saturday Hailsham had no answer to a man whose previous best haul this season was four wickets in a game.

Wheeler, who lives in Eastbourne, said: "I was brought on after six overs. It was nice conditions, a slow wicket which was turning a lot.

"When I got to seven wickets I started to realise that history could be in the making. When I got to nine, I made the comment to my team-mates, 'No run-outs now'."

Wheeler's previous best figures were 8-46 on his debut for Willingdon in a Sunday match at Guestling 14 years ago.

Willingdon 2nd XI skipper Mervyn Yates said: "As far as we know nobody has ever done it before in the 130-year history of this club."

Wheeler's efforts saw Willingdon win by four wickets to knock their rivals off top spot in the table.
