R G Jenkins (Letters, July 3) applauds Keith Winsper's Business front-page lead story "There's plenty of jobs for all" as an antidote to "all those whingeing letters you feel obliged to publish". "When did we last hear that message?" he whines. I can't possibly think, Mr Jenkins.

The BBC reported in the past week that Brighton and Hove has the highest unemployment in Sussex. This did not seem to stir up a storm on the front page of The Argus. The figures come hot on the heels of news that our city, with York, is the most profitable place in the UK to be in business because of its low labour costs. Brighton and Hove workers earn, on average, £3,000 a year less than those in the rest of the county.

Local employers are making enough to provide better-paid jobs with proper prospects and benefits that allow workers to join a company providing excellence in its field, expecting to offer commitment in return for getting it. Not casual, low-paid, pension-less, training-less employment doing nothing that benefits anyone.

Anyone who has ever done telesales or, indeed, put the phone down in disgust on a telesales call will recognise worthless employment.
