"Culture equals crap actors," says Julie Burchill (Letters, June 18).

Was it crap actors who put up the scaffolding around the Dome, redid the plumbing and electrics and did the painting, brickwork and woodwork? Will crap actors erect the Albion's new stadium and surface the link road? Or rebuild the King Alfred centre to provide leisure and housing?

Ms Burchill proudly tells us she has working-class friends such as waitresses. In my experience, they are usually the out-of-work actors and actresses.

Lots and lots of skilled workers and labourers get work from our city's big cultural projects. Stop knocking them.
