Germany eased into the last 16 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Cameroon in Shizuoka today.

The win puts the three times winners of the trophy top of Group E and sets up a second round encounter with the runner-up of Group B.

Marco Bode and Miroslav Klose both scored to fire Germany into the knockout stages in a match dominated by a series of fouls.

Both sides finished with 10 men after Carsten Ramelow and Patrick Suffo saw red in a match which also saw 16 yellow cards.

Germany started the more brightly but Cameroon came into the game mid way through the first half.

The Africans squandered a number of chances while the Germans continued to threaten on the break.

The match looked to have swung Cameroon's way with only five minutes remaining before the interval when Carsten Ramelow was dismissed for scything down Eto'o, who was racing in on goal. The referee had no option but to caution him for the second time in three minutes.

Bode replaced the largely ineffectual Jancker at the start of the second half, leaving Klose as the lone striker.

A loose pass proved to be the African champions undoing as Wome allowed Klose to break forward and, after beating two defenders, he slipped the ball through to Bode and the substitute placed the ball beyond Alioum into the far corner.

Cameroon tried desperately to fashion an equaliser but their hopes were dashed when substitute Suffo evend the numbers up after receiving his second yellow card for a foul on Ballack.

Ballack then stole in behind a ragged-looking Cameroon defence and crossed deep for Klose to head his fifth goal of the tournament beyond the helpless Alioum.
