Eastbourne rider Jon Sharples beat Hampshire star Steve Walkling to win the Hampshire Road Club's ten-mile time trial at Fontwell.

Sharples (In Gear) recorded 20min.48sec while Walkling clocked 21min.1sec.

In Gear were looking likely team winners after Friston rider James Dear finished third in 21min.21sec, two seconds ahead of St Raphael's Aran Stanton and Paul Woodman, of Eastbourne Rovers, who each recorded 21min.23sec to tie for fourth place.

However, St Raphael eventually claimed the team prize when Simon Berogna finished eighth in 21min.44sec, while In Gear's Shane Faulkner placed 11th in 22min.11sec. This gave St Raphael victory by 11 seconds.

Harry Featherstone, the 69-year-old Eastbourne Rovers veteran, recorded 23min.31sec and beat his target time by an amazing 8min.29sec to win the veterans' handicap.

A rider called Tina Turner was in the field for the women's event, but it was Hampshire's Lesley-Anne Allen (Northover) who was simply the best to win in 23min.31sec. Susan Uncles (Worthing Excelsior) placed second in 25min.41sec.

The opening event of the Goodwood Gallops at the motor circuit resulted in a win for Ashley Freeman (VC Prestige) in the 30-mile senior event.

Hastings rider Martin Markowski (VC Bayeux) did well to finish second ahead of Winchester ace Rob Hurd (Pelotun), who is now fully recovered after breaking his hip last year in the Havant Grand Prix.

Littlehampton junior Liam Terry (Bognor Regis CC) finished seventh after being given special dispensation to ride in the senior event.

Steve Dennis (East Grinstead) won the Addiscombe CC 25-mile event at Crawley in 54min.39sec.

The result could not have been closer, with Dennis beating his Hastings rival Peter Tadros (Interbike) by just one second.

Brighton Mitre's Tony Richardson and Dave Clark finished seventh and 18th in a gruelling six-hour mountain bike event at Stoke on Trent.
