The newly-formed Brighton Youth Choir made its local, and national debut with a live relay of BBC Radio 3's drivetime programme In Tune.

Under its conductor Juliette Pochin it performed Summer Is Icumen In and The Rhythm Of Life from Sweet Charity.

The choir, which takes youngsters up to the age of 18, will perform later in the Festival with the main Festival chorus and the Philharmonia Orchestra under Paul Daniel in Walton's Belshazzar's Feast.

Other local artists in the programme introduced by genial Irish host Sean Rafferty, included Lewes-based tenor Paul Austin Kelly singing jazz, international pianist Arthur Pzarro and Festival chief executive Nick Dodds.

The programme also previewed Festival performers including the four-girl trombone group Bones Apart, the Florestan Piano Trio and the Zephyr Ensemble of London.

This was the first time BBC Radio 3 had presented a live Bank Holiday relay from the city and this year the BBC is recording more than a dozen concerts for later broadcast and making a documentary about putting on the Festival.
