Tory Peter Lilley is way off the mark when he attacks Brighton and Hove's mayor (Letters, May 2).
He needs to understand the delicate balancing act the mayor undertakes when chairing city council meetings.
For the greater good, all parties should work to support the decisions he or she takes.
Moreover, the civic mayor is not a political post and the holder always puts the interests of the citizens first.
I just cannot imagine how clearing the public gallery could achieve this.
-Coun Paul Elgood, Leader of Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats
