One of Brighton and Hove's most recognisable landmarks is playing host to an advertising campaign for one of the 21st Century's newest pieces of technology.

The Clock Tower in central Brighton, once the epitome of 19th Century technological achievement, is being used for the launch of Apple Computer's outdoor poster campaign, featuring their latest flat-screen iMac computer.

The posters cover all four sides of the 75ft tall clock tower, disguising the scaffolding which has surrounded it since restoration work began last May.

The original structure, commissioned in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, cost £2,000 to build and was paid for by local advertising magnate John Willing.

The restoration project, on the hydraulic ball mechanism designed by electrical pioneer Magnus Volk, will cost considerably more.

The advertising revenue raised from Apple's campaign will contribute towards the £40,000 needed to complete the project, which it is hoped can be officially completed during the Queen's Jubilee celebrations next month.

Mark Rogers, Apple UK's general manager, said: "It was money from advertising which indirectly paid for the original construction of the Clock Tower, a technological landmark of the 19th Century.

"It seems rather fitting Apple should contribute through its own advertising to the restoration of this remarkable structure."

To support the iMac promotion, Brighton-based Solutions Inc. will be running a series of product demonstrations focusing on the new iMac's award-winning suite of software, which allows users to manage digital photography, music and video from their desktop.

The company will be hosting big-screen presentation on the evening of June 11 and in-store demonstrations every Saturday throughout this month and next.

John Parvin, managing director of Solutions Inc., said: "We felt it was important to support Apple's advertising campaign by providing a focal point where the local Brighton and Hove community can get more information and gain hands-on experience of the new iMac.

"Our series of digital hub demonstrations will provide a useful introduction to the iMac showing how it can be used to contribute to a range of creative projects, from photography to film-making."
