Chris Adams hailed one of the best one-day performances by a Sussex side under his captaincy.

The county crushed Kent by 126 runs at Canterbury yesterday in the Benson and Hedges Cup to boost their chances of a third successive appearance in the quarter-finals.

Gold award winner Murray Goodwin hit 85 not out after Richard Montgomerie (71) and Tim Ambrose (64) had put on 137 for the first wicket in a total of 282-3. Robin Martin-Jenkins and James Kirtley then took four wickets each as Kent were bowled out for 156.

Adams said: "I can't remember many better one-day performances while I have been here. We have been working hard on our one-day cricket and we have been threatening to do that for a while.

"From a batting point of view it was a perfect innings. The two openers set it up beautifully and Murray and I took it on without ever shifting up a gear or needing to take risks.

"On the bowling front Robin is 100 per cent fit now which is great news for us while James has got 18 wickets already this season. All our main players are in form which is good news."

Sussex are expected to be unchanged for tomorrow's game against Hampshire at Hove (10.45am) and Adams believes two wins from their last three games, away to Middlesex on Sunday before playing Surrey at home on Monday, should secure their place in the last eight.

He added: "If we play like we did yesterday there's no reason why we shouldn't qualify."
