Albion boss Peter Taylor could make a summer swoop for Peterborough's leading marksman Leon McKenzie.

Taylor is hoping to add as many as five new players to the promoted squad chasing a championship clinching victory against Swindon at Withdean today.

McKenzie is "definitely a contender" as Taylor starts to formulate his plans for First Division survival next season.

The Argus revealed yesterday that goal machine Bobby Zamora, captain Danny Cullip and several other key members of the existing squad will be offered new, improved contracts.

McKenzie has already been identified by Taylor as a potential partner for Zamora.

He tried to sign the ex-Crystal Palace striker before last month's transfer deadline but could not agree a fee with hard-up Posh.

"He is a good player," said Taylor. "To me he can play in Division One with ease, so he is definitely a contender."

Croydon-born McKenzie played against Albion last Saturday. The 23-year-old is in his second spell at Peterborough, where he has scored 28 League goals over the last two seasons and has two years left on his contract.

Another possible forward target is Sheffield United's out-of-favour Carl Asaba, but the Seagulls would only be able to afford him if they sold Zamora.

Asaba played under Taylor at Gillingham. "I know Carl well," said the Albion boss. "He scores goals and he is one who would always be on my list."

Taylor is still keen to make the loan move of Junior Lewis from Leicester permanent and he is targeting players with a First Division pedigree once he has thrashed out his budget with chairman Dick Knight.

"You have always got plans, but I know here will be different," he said. "It's not as if we can go and look for the best players and then sign them. We've got to sort the figures out.

"There might be some youngsters out there available now that would be very good later on, but really we need Division One players."

Meanwhile, Albion and Withdean Stadium managers Ecovert are forking out £10,000 to re-lay the Withdean pitch again from Monday to make it fit for First Division football.
