Skipper Chris Adams will not play in Sussex's final warm-up game tomorrow because of a groin injury.

Adams had to leave the field at Hove yesterday, during the county's six-wicket defeat by Surrey, but coach Peter Moores stressed this was only a precautionary measure with the start of the new season just six days away.

Moores said: "A couple of days of treatment should sort it out. Hopefully it's only a niggle, but the worst case scenario would mean he wouldn't be able to bowl."

The achilles injury which has prevented Robin Martin-Jenkins from bowling for two weeks is giving more cause for concern. An x-ray hasn't revealed any damage and the all-rounder will have a fitness test tomorrow morning in the hope of being able to bowl against Gloucestershire in a two-day match at Hove (11am).

Makeshift opener Tim Ambrose hit 19 fours as he made exactly 100 against Surrey while Martin-Jenkins hit an unbeaten 51 before Sussex declared on 206-4, leaving Surrey with an agreed target of 303 which they reached with 3.1 of their 50 overs in hand.

Alistair Brown hit 112 off 65 balls and Alec Stewart an unbeaten 94 in a third wicket stand of 164 which was surprisingly ended when Tony Cottey had Brown caught in the deep.

Moores added "All our senior players, batters and bowlers, are in decent nick which is encouraging."

Sussex (v Glos tomorrow): Montgomerie, Ambrose, Yardy, Martin-Jenkins, Carpenter, House, Prior, Davis, Lewry, Taylor, Hutchison. 12th man: Havell.
