I knew Bruce since he became a police dog. I have also known his handler PC Pete Tattum for 25 years.
He is an officer of the highest honesty, integrity and an excellent role model for any aspiring new police officer. I am proud of him and of him being my loyal friend.
My whole family, including my ten and seven-year-old grandsons, had been close to Bruce during his life and we are appalled at the decision by Sussex Police to execute him for doing his unsavoury job to the very best of his ability.
I am sure none of the senior officers making the decision of death have taken note of the officer's report or public feeling.
They have deemed it necessary to disregard any avenue to retrain the dog. I believe up to 30 days is allowed for retraining and a retest.
He should have, at least, been given this opportunity.
