A man charged with murdering his wife pushed her after she accused him of having an affair, a court heard.

Frances Gould, 44, died in hospital of a gash to her head two days after Richard Gould was arrested, Lewes Crown Court was told.

Gould, who lived with his wife in Hale Close, Bracklesham Bay, near Chichester, denies murder.

Neighbours told of the couple's drinking and constant noisy arguments.

Melany Grantham said she heard them shouting at each other on October 12 before hearing three loud bangs, one of which made her home shake.

Diane Chan, prosecuting, said Mrs Gould made a 999 call to police at 9.01 pm, saying: "I want to report an assault. My husband did it to me. All my ears are bleeding. There's blood over everything. It's on my jumper. I want him removed."

Gould was arrested at the terrace house the couple shared with their twins and Mrs Gould's 11-year-old daughter.

The court heard how as Gould was being led away he said to his wife: "You slipped in the bath. You're only doing this because you're drunk."

The court heard Mrs Gould died in hospital of a massive blood clot in her head.

The trial continues.
