A toy car collector has been left heartbroken after thieves stole his prized collection worth thousands of pounds.

More than 430 miniature cars and vans were stolen from 70-year-old Alan Huntly's home in Walmer Road, Seaford.

Thieves broke in while Mr Huntly and wife Cynthia, 66, took a bank holiday break.

They smashed their way through two doors and seized the models, which were amassed by Mr Huntly over 20 years and were to be handed to his grandchildren.

Mr Huntly said: "These were priceless to me. They were all on display in our sun lounge. Each car or van had its own special significance and meaning."

About £1,000 of damage was caused by thieves as they smashed their way into specially-made display cabinets.

Among the collection, worth £3,000, were 60 model buses, limited edition Corgi and Ledo pieces and sets of famous brand names, including Gamleys, Hamleys, Tetley and Kellogg's.

Mrs Huntly said: "These models were so very special to my husband.

"We have got six grandchildren aged between three and 21 and all have grown up in the presence of them.

"They were never able to handle them as they were just so precious to Alan. In fact, I sometimes thought he felt more for them than me."

Mr Huntly said without the boxes in which the toy vehicles are kept, they are virtually worthless.

He said: "They have totally ruined everything for me. They were my pride and joy but now I feel as if I don't want them back."

PC Stuart Hyde, of Newhaven police, appealed for witnesses to call 0845 6070999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
