It was with a mixture of joy and trepidation that I celebrated the return of Brighton and Hove Albion to the first division after a lengthy and well-documented absence.

I am very much looking forward to seeing Brighton take on teams of the calibre of Coventry City, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and, of course, our dear neighbours from Portsmouth and South London.

The trepidation stems from the weight of demand for tickets at Withdean.

While it may be possible to fit another 2,000 supporters into the temporary stadium, I fear I and many other exiles will be unable to get tickets.

Travelling Albion supporters often look forward to a weekend by the sea (thanks Blackpool) but how are we supposed to entertain the many thousands of away supporters who would travel down to Brighton for the football?

I'm no mathematician, but I know we have close to 4,000 of our own supporters going to Port Vale at the end of the season.

How many fans could teams such as Birmingham City bring down the M23?

We can probably entertain only 750 visiting supporters at Withdean at present.

So, in some instances, we could be turning away 1,200 visitors to the city every fortnight. Over a season, that's well over 25,000 visitors.

Perhaps some of these will grab a couple of pints in the city centre, maybe lodge at a B&B or even fill up at our petrol stations.

If we assume each individual spends £5 in the city, that's a minimum of £125,000 that the city is losing each year due to a team with huge potential not having a permanent home.
