Sussex residents are among some of Britain's top earners, according to the annual Sunday Times Rich List.

For the second successive year, Swedish-born packaging tycoon Hans Rausing is named the second richest person in the UK with a personal fortune of £4,500 million, up £300 million from last year.

Professor Rausing came to live in East Sussex in 1982 and owns a sprawling estate in Wadhurst.

Viscount Cowdray and the Pearson family have fallen from 13th place to 30th following the collapse in the share price of Pearson Media Group.

The fortune of the family, which owns the 500-acre Cowdray estate in West Sussex, is estimated to have fallen by £514 million to £786 million.

Music legend Paul McCartney, who has a home in Peasmarsh, near Rye, is 34th in the list thanks to the £713 million investments he made with money earned from his time with the Beatles and Wings.

The estimated wealth of property tycoon Nicholas van Hoogstraten has fallen sharply. He dropped from place 159 last year to 595.
