While the cost of buying either a small flat or house is well beyond the means of the average working person, landlords are letting property at so-called market rents - this is another way of saying getting the maximum rent for property with the minimum of living standards.

There are parts of Brighton's London Road that resemble a Third World slum - derelict shops and buildings in the middle of a so-called vibrant city.

Why are property owners allowed to let these conditions continue?

It is high time Brighton and Hove City Council intervened with its powers of compulsory purchase on these long-standing empty properties or compelled these private owners to get off their backsides in an attempt to bring about their properties being regenerated towards easing the crisis.

It is costing the council millions to house families in temporary B&B accommodation while these properties stand empty.

I would like to know what action, if any, the council is taking in this area.

So, less hot air generated at council meetings and more action on the ground. Where there is a will there is a way.
