How I agree with Dr John Mew about the selectiveness of animal rights activists (Letters, April 1).
It is wrong to eat meat because a sheep or cow is killed, yet how many caterpillars, snails, slugs and weevils (and, as a result, birds) meet a ghastly end to produce the cabbages and lettuces vegetarians happily gobble by the tonne?
How many bunnies are shot, gassed and snared to safeguard the early growth of wheat and barley to produce bread and cereals?
Surely if you genuinely care for the welfare of animals, it should be of all animals, not just the cute, cuddly ones or those with snob value.
