The manager of the Grand hotel agreed to fly flags at half-mast after a resident complained of disrespect shown to the Queen Mother.
The De Vere Grand hotel in King's Road, Brighton, has been flying the Union Flag on its roof at half-mast but five flags outside the hotel remained at full-mast, prompting a reader to complain to The Argus.
The man said: "The flags are not at half-mast and when I went in to complain I got told it is because they get stolen.
"I'm not a huge royalist but I think it's disgusting when all the other hotels, which are less well-known, are flying their flags at half-mast. The Queen Mother deserves a certain degree of respect."
Duty manager David Peskett said flying the roof flag at half-mast was a mark of respect. However, following the reader's complaint, he decided to fly all flags at half-mast.
He said there was no intention to upset anyone by flying the rest of the flags at full-mast and said there was no worry about them being stolen.
He said: "We thought having the Union Flag on the roof flying at half-mast was more a sign of respect. But we have taken the gentleman's comments on board."
