Sussex Police are contributing £5,000 towards a new seafront skate park.

The grant has been welcomed by Councillor Heather James who chairs the Lagoon Skate Appeal in Hove.

She said: "The money has been pledged to us and will be made available when all the funding and planning permissions are in place.

"The police already support the appeal and attend all steering group meetings.

"This grant recognises the importance of the project in reducing crime, and the fear of crime, caused by young people skating in inappropriate places and having nowhere to go to practise their skills in a safe environment."

Total cost of the project is estimated to be £150,000 and a National Lottery bid is being sought to cover 40 per cent of the costs.

A fund-raising committee has been established and is actively planning events to raise awareness and money for the appeal.

The next fund-raising meeting will be held at Hove Lagoon Cafe on Tuesday at 10am.
