As a member of the Ifield Society inspired to produce an ancient Ifield parish map along the lines of the West Sussex Millennium Map Project, may I congratulate the West Sussex record office education officer and archivist, Kim Leslie, for helping to gain this county the international recognition it deserves for Mapping the Millennium.

Mapping the area you live in does indeed focus "on local identity and distinctiveness", raising "people's awareness of their own surroundings" and prompting "feelings of local affection and loyalty" that bind a community together.

For example, the Ifield Society's Ramblette Three will take place this Saturday, March 30, at 11.30am from Ifield Community Centre, Ifield Drive, this time led by Ines and Chris Manning, highlighting the threat to rare species of wildflowers if a 2,500-house development goes ahead on a floodplain in and around Ifield Wood.

We look forward to seeing more evidence of West Sussex County Council and Crawley Borough Council's "commitment to protecting and enhancing the heritage and environment", especially within the ancient parish of Ifield.
